The situation

An invited slot, not an open application

The NatWest Accelerator is one of the UK's leading programmes supporting growth-stage businesses. Being invited to speak is not an open-application slot. It is an invited, curated position within a professionally organised programme backed by one of the UK's largest banks. The brief for the Tech Tuesday Lunch and Learn was narrow: most UK SMEs are actively experimenting with AI but very few have moved beyond informal trial, and the room wanted the route across that gap rather than more hype.

  • Founders were using AI tools informally but had no structured approach to evaluate or adopt them
  • No clear criteria for deciding which AI opportunities were worth pursuing versus which were novelty
  • Governance was seen as a blocker rather than a foundation for safe adoption
  • No defined path from experimentation to a production deployment that actually works in the business
